NDSU teams with Lawrence Livermore
North Dakota State University has signed a research agreement with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, based in California, to research advanced computing to boost oil production in the Bakken. An example, according to Lawrence Livermore direct Penrose Albright, would be researching better proppant material without field testing every idea. Computers could be used to tailor properties and chemicals in the proppant to see what could work better and safer. Proppant is the material used in hydraulic fracturing to hold cracks open underground to allow oil and gas to rise to the surface.
