National Geographic, as a part of a special series on energy issues, took a close look at rail transportation for oil, focusing on North Dakota’s oil boom and recent investments move oil out of the state and into market. BNSF Railway, which ships the bulk of oil out of North Dakota, said that its shipments of oil have gone up 7,000 percent over the last five years, to 88.9 million barrels.
