Minnesota moves to limit interim utility hikes
Minnesota’s attorney general, Lori Swanson, is calling for state legislation that would disallow temporary rate hikes from utility companies. Swanson says 18 other states prohibit the practice of utility companies imposing higher rates while they wait for approval from state offices for permanent rate increases. In current practice, if the rate increase approved is less than the amount collected from customers during the decision process, the utility companies are required to refund customers.
