Coal-to-liquid plant requests extension

A proposed coal-to-liquid fuel plant has asked for a fifth extension from the North Dakota Industrial Commission to study the feasibility of the project. The Industrial Commission granted American Lignite Energy LLC up to $10 million in state aid in 2007, and more than $1.35 million has been used since that time. The original deadline of the end of 2008 has been extended annually since then. American Lignite Energy, a partnership between North American Coal Corporation and Headwaters, Inc., is studying the $4 billion project which would use North Dakota lignite coal to produce 460 million gallons of gasoline a year.
