Coal takes to the road

Basin Electric Power Cooperative has taken its coal to the highways to supplement coal deliveries currently not being met by BNSF Railway. Basin is currently running 250 hauls of coal a day from the Coteau Mine, northeast of Beulah, to the Leland Olds Station at Stanton. The company started using trucks for transporting its coal because they are having a tougher time meeting the strict two hour time frame that BNSF requires to fill a 60-car coal train. A representative from Basin Electric said that the rail company used to be more flexible with the time frame, but due to increased business, does not have the crews available at this time.
