Federal Policy
Congress has enacted three major pieces of energy legislation throughout the last two decades. Energy Policy Acts were passed by Congress in 1992, 2005 and 2007. Other pieces of legislation have also encompassed energy provisions, including the Food, Conservation & Energy Act of 2008 otherwise known as the 2008 Farm Bill and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
Federal environmental policies also have a significant impact on the energy sector. The last comprehensive piece of environmental legislation passed in the United States was the 1990 Clean Air Act, which included amendments aimed at reducing smog and air pollution. The law put mechanisms in place to control the emissions of sulfur dioxide and established an emissions trading program to reduce the costs associated with controlling emissions.
