North Dakota is known for being windy. According to a study recently completed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and AWS Truewind, North Dakota is the sixth "windiest state."
Since early 2003, more than 800 turbines have been erected in North Dakota with the capacity to generate a combined total of nearly 1,424 MW of wind power. There are commercial-scale wind projects located in eight North Dakota counties. North Dakota is currently ranked 9th nationwide in installed wind capacity.
North Dakota is also home to two wind manufacturing facilities. LM Wind Power, Grand Forks, produces fiberglass wind turbine blades and DMI Industries, West Fargo, manufactures wind towers. These two facilities employ a combined total of more than 1,200 people. Wanzek Construction, Fargo, specializes in wind project installation.
