Tribal Nations & Energy Development
North Dakota's population includes more than 31,000 American Indians, 40 percent of which are younger than 20 years old. Approximately 60 percent of North Dakota's American Indian population live on reservations.
Reservation lands cover nearly 2 million acres of North Dakota's landscape and much of that landscape offers opportunities for energy development. Two wind turbines currently operate in the Belcourt area. Fort Totten and the Three Affiliated Tribes each have an operating turbine. Additional wind development is being considered by tribes throughout the state. In addition, the Three Affiliated Tribes are looking into the feasibility of constructing an oil refinery near Makoti. Significant oil and gas resources are also being developed on the Fort Berthold Reservation.
