Hydrogen
North Dakota is home to the National Center for Hydrogen Technology located at the Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) on the campus of the University of North Dakota (UND).
Hydrogen may become a primary energy source in the years to come; however, continued research and innovation will be required to allow economic commercialization of hydrogen as a mainstream source of energy. Ongoing research at the NCHT includes the production of hydrogen from renewable and fossil resources, hydrogen storage, and the development of an "on-demand" hydrogen production system.

Several partners, including Basin Electric Power Cooperative, the US Department of Energy, North Dakota State University (NDSU) and UND, are also collaborating on a wind-to-hydrogen research project to develop a conversion system for hydrogen vehicles. Hydrogen is being produced at the test site and is utilized by four vehicles, including a Caterpillar tractor.
